Costa Rican Dictionary

Blanca (BLahnCA)- See Gringa

Gringa (Gr-ee-ngah) - A term given to me when I pass on the street, sit on the bus, or stroll the grocery store aisles. **The term has no negative connotation and is simply a way to describe those who do not look Tico.

Hormigas (Or-mee-gahs)- The bane of my existence. Small ants that crawl over any surface that has speck of food on it.

Mae (MY) - a.k.a dude or man. Heard most often coming from the adolescent boys in my classrooms. Used most often when discussing soccer, video games or tv shows.

Pura Vida (Puh-ra Vee-dah) - A phrase used to express positive emotion. Can be used as a form of good bye. Most often heard by rasta and rasta-wannabes on the Limon side or those in the Tourist industry (makes them seem more authentic!).

Tico Time(Tee-co) - The time in which Tico's (Costa Rican's) feel it's appropriate to depart and arrive. Always predictable late, never punctual. Drives this Gringa Teacher up the wall.

Zaguate - Term to describe "dog of the street". Also used to describe a man who sleeps with many women at once.
